Community Partner: Roberts Academy School

Roberts Academy is a public school for Pre-K through 8th grade students in Price Hill. The students are from a wide range of backgrounds including 20 different countries, with a majority from Latin America. Once a month the health care providers at CCHMC HealthWorks volunteer at a clinic for the students that is held on the school’s campus to facilitate access. Care is provided for acute illnesses as well as health, nutrition, and fitness education and counseling. The HealthWorks team help patients and their families set realistic goals while considering health disparities that may act as barriers to creating healthier eating habits or increasing physical activity. By doing so they aim to reduce the risk of obesity related comorbidities including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and NAFLD.
About Alejandra

Hi! My name is Alejandra Dumenigo and I am an aspiring pediatrician from Miami, Fl. I received a BS in Biology from the University of Florida and an MS in Physiology from Georgetown University. I chose this elective in hopes of continuing to develop my passion for working with Hispanic and other underrepresented populations in the community, specifically at Roberts Academy K-8. While serving as co-chair of the Pediatrics club during my M1 and M2 years I created a program at Roberts Academy for members of the club to volunteer at their afterschool enrichment programs. Later, I began volunteering at the monthly clinic run by CCHMC for the students. The relationships I formed within the community during this time have allowed me to better understand their specific needs. I look forward to organizing the appropriate initiatives to address these needs with the guidance of this elective.
